Dia de los Muertos, (Day of the Dead) is a tradition that celebrates life and encourages human contact with the dead. In the Oaxacan region of Mexico, every town has its unique rituals. My intention with these images is to highlight the warmth and communal sensibility of the holiday. Children and grownups dress up, gathering in the cemeteries to be close to their beloved family members who have passed. Music and dance highlight the festivities, particularly at comparsas which are carnival type processions that travel to every home in a town and often last until the wee hours of the morning. – Maya Joseph-Goteiner

Children dressing up in costumes is part of the U.S. Halloween. It is becoming part of the holiday here, however, although it is looked down on by people celebrating the traditional dia de los muertos.

My young adult daughter who is part Latina is celebrating this year for the first time. She was raised without that side of her culture and has found it on her own. She is celebrating her grandfather, who was assasinated, in Latin AMerica during the 1950′s, and she is also finding that part of herself that she didn’t know. The blending and learning of the best of all cultures is wonderful. Love the pictures, love the joy and pride.
