“This image was taken after a day of rock climbing in Boulder Canyon. Tyrolean traverses are the standard to access climbs on the south side of the canyon. Most of the year the scene is relatively tame but from May through June the spring run-off can create a dramatic scene. To cross you simply attach your harness to the fixed lines and pull yourself across. The scene was completely in the shade so I used a strobe out of frame, camera right, to provide subtle backlight and subject separation,” says Serbo. Celin Serbo is an outdoor adventure sports photographer based in Boulder, Colorado.

Seattle Mariners All-Star right fielder Ichiro Suzuki goes deep into the gap in right center to rob Atlanta Brave Robert Fick of an extra-base hit. Andruw Jones was on first base and was headed for third when Ichiro made this incredible grab. Jones cut across the infield failing to touch second base on his way back and was doubled off of first base. The Mariners won the game 2-1.

Lynda Churilla’s atmospheric black and white photographs invoke thoughts of endless summers—a perfect salve for the January cold enveloping most of the country. Made in locales like Islamorada, Florida and Montauk, New York, where sun and waves are often the primary concerns of the day, her images show the beauty and energy of simpler pursuits. Churilla is exhibiting her work through February 20, 2011 at Robin Rice Gallery in New York City. (more…)
